What I think about when I'm supposed to be reading about rhetorical communication:
So I know that I'm a Computer Science major, and I know that I've wanted to be in the field of Computer Science since I was in 10th grade, but do you know what I only just realized today, like, right now? The word "computer" is just weird. Think about it. I mean yeah, computers do compute stuff, but they do so many more things now. Like, that's not even an appropriate name anymore. Someone should fix that. That is all.
Oh, hello.
HA. The more time I have, the less I write. Isn't life just funny?
I have a good excuse at least (I think). I've been working on a secret project!
I'm constantly trying to expand my programming skill set (with applicable technologies, mind you), and I've been DYING to get my hands on the Silverlight tools. But as fate would have it, the copy of Visual Studio 2008 that I received from MSDNAA was CORRUPT and I couldn't install the freaking thing. Talk about torture. So instead of the technology-of-the-month being Silverlight, I had to settle for JavaScript (Big deal right? Where have I been?), and I'm working on a pretty fun thing. David is my beta tester.
I can't reveal what the project is yet, but here is a snapshot:

I was finally able to install VS 2008 last night (I will spare you the painful details), and I'm about to go download Expression Blend (part of the Microsoft Expression Studio) and make some REALLY COOL STUFF. I'm wicked excited.
I love programming.
UPDATE: Oh yes, and a big "thank you" to Darren for letting me know that my comments were broken. :) Thanks, Darren!!!
The Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing
Exciting news!!! I have received a scholarship to attend this year's Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing conference at Keystone Resort in Keystone, Colorado! All expenses paid: travel, lodging, registration fees. I will be going with sixteen other women from the CoC. The conference will take place from October 1, 2008 - October 4, 2008. So many fun and interesting events will take place during that time period. If you don't know who Grace Hopper is, you should definitely look into her amazing accomplishments and contributions to the field of Computer Science.
On Social Networking
At the Grace Hopper conference, I attended a session called "Web 2.0: Online Social Networks - Impact to Our Careers" which consisted of a panel of three highly successful women from PayPal, Sun, and Google who talked about the importance of social networking in a technical career, particularly if you are going into web design/development. They emphasized that yes, employers do indeed google your name to find out as much as they can about you before deciding to consider you, and if you claim to be a web designed/developer and they can't find anything about you, they're kind of like, "Where has this girl been for the past decade?" So basically it's career suicide if you don't join these things, right?
Additionally and coincidentally, my friend Matt recently posted about this very same thing (in a sense) about a month before the conference. Matt's thing was that he was "reserving my spot online" by signing up for a billion social networking sites using his name, his actual real life name. That way, when he gets googled, he's all set. He's in the know. Potential employers, or anyone for that matter, can easily discover information about him, and they always know that he's the guy they're looking for. It's brilliant.
So yeah, I finally decided to oblige to conformity and join social networking sites in the interest of my future career.
In conclusion, you may find me at the following social networking sites for now:
Facebook - Amanda Ladd
Linked In - Amanda Ladd
Twitter - Amanda Ladd
Ning - Amanda Ladd
MySpace - aymikiluna (soon to be changed)
Tumblr - Amanda Ladd
I will add more and add them to the "Lists" section once I decide which others ones will be useful. And fun.
