Return from Grace Hopper 2008
Well, I am back from Colorado. I have a ton of thoughts and opinions and memories about the trip, but I'm actually too tired to relay them in writing. So sorry. :) Here is one picture taken at the conference center.
Walkway at Grace Hopper 2008 in Keystone, CO
I will say that the parts of Colorado that I saw were beautiful. The only thing is that no one could breathe what with being 10,000 feet above sea level.
If you'd like to see more pictures, check Facebook. It's good to be home. :) Good night!
Done. SO DONE!
Guys. Guys. I am so done with everything. This is how happy I am right now:
So happy to be done with my three weeks of academic nightmare.
(Don't ask what my hair is doing.)
Actually that was taken the day before my Design of OS test approximately a week and a half ago, but the point is that I'm so happy right now. A billion weights have been lifted off my shoulders.
I can do ANYTHING. Fall Break starts tomorrow at 11am.
LOVE.
I'm a sickling.
I woke up this morning determined to go to 10am Psychology because it was the day before Fall Break and we were having a guest lecture - I figured it was a prime day for our professor to offer extra credit for being in class. Apparently he does that - it says so in the syllabus.
Unknown to me, after I got out of the shower I would then proceed to cough up nothing for 50 (fifty) minutes. That's right, I couldn't go five to ten seconds without coughing.
David came back from his 9am class and drove me to the Student Health Center where I officially lost all faith in Georgia Tech's student services. Parking, housing, counseling center, health center...the whole lot of them.
I've never been to the freaking health center so how was I supposed to know that they don't take walk-ins? WTF? Yeah hi, what about emergencies?
Anyway, after the receptionst made me feel dumb about not knowing this, and while I was trying so hard not to cough on her, and after I told her what was wrong with me and she said, "Is that it?" like I was trying to act like I was dying, she finally told me that I could have an appointment that was in fifteen minutes. I said yes, sat in the waiting area and cried. David was also there, bless his soul.
The story ends in a happy ending in which my doctor was really nice and gave me medicine, and David surprised me with a white rose when he came by to check on me after his last class of the day.
The end. :)
Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland
I interrupt my weekend of sickness to bring you the following news:
Tim Burton is directing a live-action and CGI version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland!
I own this darling set of prints from The Black Apple who you must check out
because her artwork is amazing. (Nothing to do with the film)
I KNOW, IT'S MY FAVORITE THING TO THINK ABOUT.
This version of the classic stories is featuring three of my favorite actors: Anne Hathaway (White Queen), Helena Bonham Carter (Red Queen), and Johnny Depp (Mad Hatter). I cannot wait until March 5th, 2010. The movie is currently being filmed.
I absolutely love Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. "Alice in Wonderland" is my second favorite Disney movie, and I own multiple copies of the book. I am always on the lookout for different copies.
I am now going to go swoon over the fact that Johnny Depp is playing the Mad Hatter.
On Social Networking
At the Grace Hopper conference, I attended a session called "Web 2.0: Online Social Networks - Impact to Our Careers" which consisted of a panel of three highly successful women from PayPal, Sun, and Google who talked about the importance of social networking in a technical career, particularly if you are going into web design/development. They emphasized that yes, employers do indeed google your name to find out as much as they can about you before deciding to consider you, and if you claim to be a web designed/developer and they can't find anything about you, they're kind of like, "Where has this girl been for the past decade?" So basically it's career suicide if you don't join these things, right?
Additionally and coincidentally, my friend Matt recently posted about this very same thing (in a sense) about a month before the conference. Matt's thing was that he was "reserving my spot online" by signing up for a billion social networking sites using his name, his actual real life name. That way, when he gets googled, he's all set. He's in the know. Potential employers, or anyone for that matter, can easily discover information about him, and they always know that he's the guy they're looking for. It's brilliant.
So yeah, I finally decided to oblige to conformity and join social networking sites in the interest of my future career.
In conclusion, you may find me at the following social networking sites for now:
Facebook - Amanda Ladd
Linked In - Amanda Ladd
Twitter - Amanda Ladd
Ning - Amanda Ladd
MySpace - aymikiluna (soon to be changed)
Tumblr - Amanda Ladd
I will add more and add them to the "Lists" section once I decide which others ones will be useful. And fun.
Lucky and thankful
Remember how on Friday I was trying so hard to deny my sickly fate and make it to Psychology in case the professor decided to give us free bonus points?
He gave them to us today. :)
*lucky and thankful*
Eagle Eye
No need to give excuses for my absence. Moving right along...
Last night, my friends and I went to see Eagle Eye.
"Jerry and Rachel are two strangers thrown together by a mysterious phone call from a woman they have never met. Threatening their lives and family, she pushes Jerry and Rachel into a series of increasingly dangerous situations, using the technology of everyday life to track and control their every move." [Taken from IMDB.] That synopsis doesn't really do the film justice, so I highly recommend watching the trailer. The trailer is what got me.
HOLY CRAP, this movie totally sucked me in; I loved it, I absolutely loved it. I don't usually love action movies, but the cast, acting, and plot line was amazing. Also, I love Shia LaBeouf. And Michelle Monaghan is so pretty, I couldn't stop looking at her. I immediately fell in love with the main characters. People all around me were literally on the edge of their seats for much of the movie. You were always wondering what would happen next, and I don't remember the film being that predictable. I was sitting with my hand clasped over my mouth for almost all of the movie. It was just so good. You need to see it.
I just wanted you all to know how much I freaking loved this movie. It's one of those movies that you can't stop thinking about after it's over. Everyone needs to see it. :)
